Welcome to The Daily Brief

There’s plenty of financial news. Making sense of it takes a little more work.

The Daily Brief is our attempt to help. Every day, we unpack important stories in markets, business and the economy, explain how things work, and ask why they matter.

Think of it as a daily news show, but a little slower. We’re interested in the business behind the stock, the incentives behind a policy, and the consequences behind a headline.

What you get?

Each edition brings you a two stories we think deserve your attention, alongside shorter tidbits on other developments worth knowing.

We cover listed companies and private businesses, banking and finance, technology, energy, trade and government policy. Our focus is India, but we follow stories from around the world when they help explain what’s happening here.

An IPO might be our starting point for understanding an industry. A coal shortage might lead us into the economics of moving freight. A change in insurance rules might tell us who earns what when you buy a policy.

We work through reports, filings, research and company commentary, then put what we learn into plain English. We link our sources so you can follow the trail, question our interpretation or dig deeper.

The aim is simple: you should leave each edition understanding something better.

Who it’s for

If you invest, work in business, or are simply curious about how the economy works, we write this for you.

You don’t need a finance degree or a portfolio to follow along. We explain unfamiliar terms as we go, without assuming that a simple explanation has to leave out the nuance.

There’s more from Markets by Zerodha

The Daily Brief is part of Markets by Zerodha, our broader effort to make markets, business and the economy easier to understand. We started it out of frustration with how hard it was to find accessible, thoughtful financial news in India.

We also publish:

  • After Market Report
A quick rundown of the trading day, delivered after markets close. Market moves, sector performance, institutional flows, important news and events to watch next—all in one place.

  • Subtext
Conversations with people who have spent years thinking about finance: investors, traders, economists, founders and regulators. We turn those discussions into articles that explore how things work and what experience has taught them.

  • The Chatter
We go through earnings calls and other management commentary to bring you the most interesting things companies are saying about their businesses, industries and the wider economy.

The people behind it

Bhuvan (Bhu1) started it all and leads the vision for Markets by Zerodha. He’s also on a mission to replace the entire team with AI. Until that works out, here are the human writers:

  • Pranav Agarwal — Big Pranav

  • Pranav Manie — Small Pranav, aka Kumar

  • Kashish Kapoor — KK

  • Krishna Lohia — Raju

  • Vignesh Pai — Viggy

  • Kulsum Khanum — also KK

  • Mridula — Mrids

Two Pranavs, two KKs. Naming things clearly remains a work in progress.
