The purpose of CAFE norms was to reduce the CO2 emissions and Maruti is busy fighting the regulation instead of bringing in innovation.

When they do such things, it is evident of how they do not care about the pollution in our cities and just want to protect their business.

But isn't their worry justified, as hatchbacks do lead to lesser CO2 emissions and deserve better treatment in CAFE norms.

That is not to ignore the fact that the longer term vision remains the shift towards EV and Maruti indeed has shied away from investing in that space aggressively.

I don't think we are at a stage where we can afford relaxations in norms for anyone. Our air pollution problem is killing people everyday. The objective for each car OEM should be to pollute as little as possible and not 'let them pollute a little'.

If they lead to lower CO2 emissions then it should be easy to comply with CAFE norms right? Why ask for an exception?

Also need to look at this along with all the hacks being proposed. Strong hybrids are being given higher weightage almost on par with EVs. Another contraption called range extended EVs is being treated on par with EVs. Flex fuels being given a discount as well.

Put everything together, it's all about not investing in EVs and surviving in the market.
