The first story was really fantastic. I just read about UDAN 3-4 days back in the book Viksit Bharat 2047 by Aditya Pittie. Indian Govt is on the right track, but you did address all the doubts which I had!
A wonderful and a detailed analysis of midcap/tier-II IT firms indeed. I always remained perplexed by their excellent and consistent performance over the last few years, but could not quite lay a finger on anything specific, particularly how could they thrive in the midst of an overall IT slump. Your article clarifies a lot of my doubts and provides a fresh perspective on IT firms. Thanks you very much 👍
> More importantly, is there more that should be done or this is just how regional air travel will always be?
If a lot of these Tier-2 & Tier-3 cities improve their infrastructure and gain certain USP's to serve as a tourist spot, then demand would ramp up organically.
Why are places like Goa / Pondicherry such popular travel destinations despite being tiny cities?
It's because they have established themselves as popular tourist spots. Their USP's are beaches and being away from city life.
What about Ayodhya?
Since the inception of Ram Mandir, the demand for air travel has grown 450% - it has established itself as a religious tourist spot.
I feel that a lot of these regional Indian remote cities have a lot of potential to become a de-facto spot for something that is unique to them (especially in the Northeast)
However they lack the infrastructure to be able to harness this potential.
That's a very valid point. Tourism can be great driver of air travel, but we can't forget the seasonality of this demand. These spots, especially in the case of Goa, a large volume of tourists visit during peak season, while during off season these places virtually get no business.
This makes a bad business case for airlines, since they would want demand certainty to seriously consider adding a route in their portfolio. If its very seasonal, it might not just make business sense for them.
