Import barriers and QCOs on polyester yarn and intermediates restricted access to cheaper or better imported inputs, raised domestic yarn costs, and weakened India’s competitiveness. The beneficiaries were large domestic polyester producers, including Reliance; the losers were small fabric and garment makers.
GST disruption and demonetisation added to the pain for an already informal, cash-dependent sector.
Kamaths are billionaires now. They should have the courage to say this plainly.
