Excellent summary of the Premji report. The sequence argument is what grabbed me: the US built deep capital markets after industrializing, while India seems to be financializing first and hoping the real economy follows. Household liabilities rising from 34% to 41% of GDP in five years is the number that worries me most, because SIPs getting financialized on the asset side while consumption gets propped by credit on the liability side is exactly the symmetric trap you describe. But I wonder if the report is too pessimistic about the government as a demand engine now. Fiscal room is better than it has been in years. Shouldn't the test be whether Delhi uses it before household leverage turns?
